Across the bay from Havana lies a quickly developing residential portion of Cuba. In contrast, scattered along the coast one finds centuries-old forts of the Old City. For Technical Communications we were asked to build an eight room school with an adjoining foundation for research. The site was particularly difficult as it has large topographical changes because of an inlet of water.

I split school’s program between the two separate, hovering bars. To the West, the student’s classrooms sit raised above a covered playground. The bar sitting over the water to the east houses the research foundation, cafeteria, and gym. Both bars have easy access to light and fresh air via the circulation balconies that run their length. Parts of the skin, peel away to create outdoor rooms for all occupants to enjoy.

Banks Family Home

The Banks are a young, upbeat family but their drab 1960s home in Austin, TX did not match their spunk. My partner and I designed the Banks a modest addition to their home on a very small budget, focusing on bringing more light and better views into an expanded living room and galley kitchen.

The main design feature of the home is a wrapping metal roof that encloses a finished wood interior. Simple, clean punctures create clerestory and picture windows with views out to their large backyard.

The project designs have been recently approved by the city and the couple move forward with construction in the coming months

Credenza

A flexible piece of furniture designed to act as storage and seating in small spaces. Brass pieces fixed with custom hinges provide for quick storage of small items such as keys. Storage doors open in different directions depending on predicted items to be stored within.
